History of the Spinning Top in Spain | The Toy That Never Disappeared

Historia de la peonza en España | El juguete que nunca desapareció

History of the spinning top: the origin of one of the oldest games in the world

The spinning top is much more than a toy. It is probably one of the oldest traditional games in human history and, at the same time, one of the few that has managed to survive generation after generation to this day.

Long before consoles, the internet, or even many modern sports existed, spinning tops were already part of the entertainment for children and adults in different parts of the world. The idea was simple, but tremendously addictive: to make an object spin for as long as possible using only skill, coordination, and practice.

The first historical records related to spinning tops appear thousands of years ago in ancient civilizations such as Greece, Rome, Egypt, and China. In many cases, they were handcrafted using wood, clay, bone, or even stone. Although their designs were very basic compared to current ones, the essential concept already existed: a balanced body that spun on a point thanks to manual impulse.

Over time, the spinning top spread virtually worldwide. Each culture developed its own ways of playing, its names, and its manufacturing styles. In some places it was known as peonza, in others as trompo, spinning top, or top. But the objective was always the same: to master the spin.

The arrival of the spinning top in Spain

In Spain, the spinning top became particularly popular between the late 19th century and much of the 20th century, quickly becoming one of the most recognizable traditional games in schoolyards, squares, and streets.

For decades, thousands of children grew up playing with handcrafted wooden spinning tops. At that time, learning to launch a spinning top correctly was almost a ritual among friends. The older ones taught the younger ones, impromptu challenges were organized, and something very important emerged that still exists today: the culture of challenge and self-improvement.

The spinning top was not simply “making something spin.” It was about learning, practicing, failing, and trying again until mastering the movement.

And that is precisely one of the reasons why this game still holds so much value today.

Unlike many modern entertainments, the spinning top requires:

  • coordination,
  • patience,
  • practice,
  • reflexes,
  • and perseverance.

Every small advance is truly noticeable. The player feels real progress.

That's why spinning tops ended up becoming part of Spanish popular culture for decades.

From traditional toy to modern spinning top

With the arrival of new technologies and video games, many traditional games lost prominence. However, the spinning top managed to stay alive thanks to something very special: its enormous capacity for evolution.

In the early 2000s, a new era began for modern spinning tops. The spinning top stopped being seen only as a classic toy and began to transform into a much more technical, visual, and spectacular experience.

It is precisely in this context that Trompos Space was born.

The birth of Trompos Space

The history of Trompos Space begins in 2005 with a very clear idea: to revive real play and get children to play outdoors again, away from screens.

In its beginnings, the project started by handcrafting wooden spinning tops, maintaining the traditional essence of the classic game. However, a much more ambitious vision soon emerged: to completely modernize the world of the spinning top.

As the project evolved, more striking designs, brighter colors, and new concepts began to be developed that transformed the traditional spinning top into something much more modern and attractive for new generations.

In 2008, Trompos Space was officially born, and one of the great changes in the sector occurred: the spinning top began to be understood also as progression, technique, and a culture of challenge.

That same period marked the birth of iconic models like Saturno, one of the brand's most recognizable spinning tops and one of the models that helped consolidate Trompos Space as a national reference in the world of modern spinning tops.

The Roller revolution and technical innovation

One of the most important moments in the modern evolution of spinning tops came in 2009, when Trompos Space patented the use of bearings in a spinning top and the famous Roller spinning tops were born.

The incorporation of the spinning tip completely changed the game experience:

  • more control,
  • more precision,
  • more stability,
  • and many more possibilities for performing tricks.

This allowed the spinning top to evolve from a simple traditional toy to something much closer to a technical and creative discipline.

From then on, increasingly advanced models began to appear such as:

  • Pegasus,
  • Jupiter,
  • Neptune,
  • Saturn Xtreme,
  • Mercury,
  • or special editions like Graffiti.

Each designed with different features for different playing styles and experience levels.

The spinning top as a culture of challenge

Currently, the world of spinning tops is experiencing a new period of growth thanks to social networks like TikTok and YouTube, where thousands of people discover new tricks and techniques daily.

However, beyond trends, the true value of the spinning top remains the same as decades ago:
the feeling of real progress.

At Trompos Space, we have always defended a very clear idea:
“less screen time, more real play.”

Because the spinning top is not just about playing. It's about:

  • practicing,
  • improving,
  • sharing,
  • falling,
  • trying again,
  • and finally mastering something real with your own hands.

That's why for years Trompos Space also held exhibitions, workshops, and activities in schools, promoting active play, socialization, and the culture of effort among children and young people.

Spinning tops today: tradition, design, and innovation

Today, modern spinning tops are much more than a traditional toy. They combine:

  • design,
  • engineering,
  • creativity,
  • urban culture,
  • and community.

Current spinning tops allow for constant evolution, learning hundreds of tricks, and experiencing the game in a completely different way than years ago.

And yet, the essence remains exactly the same as centuries ago:
spinning a top and enjoying the challenge of mastering it.

Because some games never disappear.
They simply evolve.
